Donna Karen attended Parson's School of design and began her career as assistant designer in the 1960's to Anne Klein.
She was then promoted to Associate Designer in 71 and subsequently Head Designer when Anne Klein died.
In 1984, Karen started her own line of fashion to 'create modern clothes for modern people'.
She showed her first women's clothing collection in 1985.
She quickly became known for her 'essentials' line that initially offered seven easy pieces which could be mixed and matched.
Donna Karen always insisted that she would only design clothes that she would wear herself.
She also runs the DKNY fashion line, which is a range designed for younger women.
In 1977 she quit as Head Designer of the company but still acts as the Chairwomen.
