Muir was English and was known as the world’s greatest “dressmaker” that was one of the finest at the time, won achievements such as “dress of the year” not just once but three times. Born in 1928 and sadly passed away in 1995 she began her career in Liberties and Co in the stockroom and gradually worked her way up to a shop assistant, which meant she could be at one with the clothing and so she began sketching and became involved in Liberties Fashion Show. She then moved on to work in Jaeger, at this point she was approached by David Barnes a mass-market jersey dress manufacture who recognised her exceptional talent and offered to fund her own label and so it became Jane and Jane in 1962. Having the connection with Liberties she often features a lot of their textiles in her designs. Although at this period a lot of subculture was emerging, Jane Muir designed for women with a mature look and chose not to follow any trends; her dresses were radical but classic.
