RTW Fall 2010
Vivienne Westwood born 1941 Derbyshire, moved to London ages 17 and studied at the Harrow School of Art, taking fashion and silversmithing. Westwood lived a pretty normal life married, with children and had a career in teaching. However this all changed when she met Malcolm McLaren.
McLaren decided to open a boutique at 430 King's Road called "Let It Rock" (later known variously as "Sex", "Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die", and "Seditionaries"). Westwood created clothes which McLaren conceived, drawing inspiration from bikers, fetishists and prostitutes. Westwood was deeply interested by the punk fashion phenomenon of the 1970s, and was known as the ‘mother of punk’, which made the subculture succeed even more.
Vivienne Westwood’s first catwalk show was presented in 1981, featuring the collaboration of both her and McLaren’s ideas and designs. Her trademark is definitely recognised as punk.
Westwood now has become known as one of the most influential British fashion designers of the 20th century.
